The Million Dollar Wiki Project

If you are at all a reader of the "big name" bloggers out there, you undoubtedly already know about the Million Dollar Wiki project. If you haven't heard of it, it's a pretty clever website setup by a guy named Graham which has netted him nearly $100,000 so far, and will probably eventually earn him his goal of $1,000,000. The idea is simple in execution, Graham has set up wiki software at his domain MillionDollarWiki.com, and he is charging $100 for a word entry on the wiki. The words are first come first serve, and the owner who buys the page can do whatever they wish with it, including monetization and promotion. This might sound like a bad deal for the "owners" of wiki words, because they are spending quite a bit of cash to obtain pages on the wiki, but in reality it is possible and not that difficult to earn your $100 back in monetization efforts, or in promotion for your existing business or website. The one thing to keep in mind though is that the site is getting a lot of promotion, and it seems poised to get even bigger media coverage in the coming months, so now is the best time to be involved, while it is getting a surge of traffic. If the site gets enough momentum behind it, and a community builds successfully, it has potential to have momentum for quite a while.

I have always liked the wiki concept, and I've used wiki software for projects in the past, myself. Wikipedia is a shining example of how wonderfully complex a wiki can get. And while Graham is using wiki software for his idea, it is unfortunately missing the one thing that really defines most wikis, the ability for anyone to edit an entry. Of course, this feature wouldn't make sense with Graham's business model, but really I find that without that feature, the wiki software is really just a content management system. Maybe someday someone will figure out a good way to monetize the traditional wiki setup.

As for me, you probably won't hear about me buying any wiki pages quite yet, but I am hoping to win a contest Graham is running on his blog. By mentioning the Million Dollar Wiki I am not only promoting a worthy website idea, but I am entering myself into a drawing for 2 pages on the million dollar wiki. And, assuming I win the pages, I am helping promote a site that will hopefully help me promote my blog. We'll see if it turns out to be a win-win situation or not. Now I just need to come up with a good contest that will get people to write about my blog...
