A Summer of Computer Repairs
It's a summer of broken computers so far for me - two genuinely screwed up laptops, one desktop in need of repair, and a scare with a glass of water, and all of that in June? I'm hoping July turns out a little better. My girlfriend's laptop, after taking it's second fall must be sent in for repair; it's power adapter broke much in the same way mine did a little while back, but her's is covered by an awesome accidental damage warranty - so it will hopefully come back as good as new, with ALL of it's problems resolved. My girlfriend's brother's laptop on the other hand may not be covered any longer by warranty, but so far we haven't been able to find out because HP's customer service department has been giving us trouble. His computer won't boot up, and half the time it doesn't get past the BIOS boot screen, making me think that it's probably a bad motherboard or hard drive causing the problem. Unfortunately I am not well versed in laptop repair, and I don't trust myself to bust it open, at least not until we are sure about the status of the warranty. He may end up having to pay a sizable amount to fix it, or buy a new system altogether. My sister's desktop has had ongoing problems that I've tried a few minor fixes on, but so far nothing has cured it - and I am now thinking that her motherboard is bad as well. Now the choice is, replace the 5 year old part or do a semi-recent hardware upgrade for a few hundred dollars? The choice is her's really, I am willing to do either, but I hope to get it repaired for her soon either way. Lastly, my laptop had a slightly filled glass of water spilled on and around it yesterday thanks to my crazy and evil cat Cyrus, but it seemed to mostly soak into the chair the computer was sitting on rather than the computer itself, and after a night of drying out on top of my CRT monitor it seems to be working fine. I was scared last night, I thought I might have lost my laptop, but I was lucky. So, if anyone else out there was planning on bringing me a computer to fix, maybe wait until July or August.
