Helio: A New Cell Phone Company That Actually Understands the Market
In the past few months I have been hearing some really good advertisements on the radio. I know, this isn't something you would ever expect to hear from anyone, but it's true. The ads I am talking about are coming from one company in particular, and I classify them as "good" because I don't immediately recognize them as ads. Because of this, I've actually listened to part or all of the ad and then realize I am hearing an ad, instead of immediately changing the station and not listening. The company is called Helio, and they are a new cell phone company. Their radio ads are able to trick me because they have the DJ from the station give a testimonial on the air about their service and their phones, and it isn't immediately obvious that you are hearing advertising. I've also heard promotions proclaiming, "This hour is commercial free thanks to our sponsor, Helio" - this is also a non-traditional way to promote your service, without appearing to be actually advertising. So, you might be asking, why am I telling you this? Firstly, it's because the advertising and marketing field interests me, and I like their style. More importantly, I've heard their impressive ad campaign enough times that I actually decided to go to their website and check out their service, and I am impressed there as well. For the past 3 years I have been wholly unimpressed with the service and non-value of my cell phone plan at T-Mobile, and I have been searching for something better without results. Fortunately, I think Helio is the company I was searching for - they are the perfect cell phone company for a geek like me. First, they have highly advanced phones that are sleek, modern, and well equipped - for instance, some of their phones come with a 3 megapixel camera built in, that's the same resolution as my current digital camera.
The best part about Helio though is their service, which sounds amazing. They have a 3G data network, which allows for broadband equivalent speeds while surfing the internet or searching on a cell phone. They also have GPS enabled phones with google maps, giving you a navigation system on your phone. They have all kinds of messaging (including a service to send pictures to flikr), email, chat, the ability to read RSS feeds, gaming, mobile myspace, video ringers, youtube, large internal memory, etc. Also, their competitively priced plans come with Unlimited access to all services, meaning you won't be paying anything extra to use the cool features. I know that this post is probably starting to sound like a commercial, and I apologize, but I am excited about finding a cell phone company that finally gets things right. I promise, this is not a paid post, I am just someone who is excited for his T-Mobile contract to expire, so he can jump on over and get a new Helio plan instead. You might be wondering, with all of the recent buzz about the iPhone why wasn't I excited? The reason the iPhone doesn't impress me is because it is just a piece of hardware - and to truly get the cell phone market, I think it's important to offer awesome service as well as impressive hardware. The iPhone is tied to an antiquated cell phone company who is used to doing things the backwards way, so I wouldn't ever consider buying one. When I do move over to Helio, expect to see a review of the phone I get, as well as the service. Have you seen Helio advertised in a unique way? Do you have a Helio plan? Do you want one now that I told you about it? Tell me what you think!
