Entrepreneurial Hope

I have always had a tendency to think in an entrepreneurial way - I come up with crazy schemes that I think might make money, I dream up new business plans in my head, and I like to examine everyday life for opportunities. As you might expect, my ideas are usually nothing special, or they are far fetched - but every now and then I think of something that could possibly be viable. The influences of my very entrepreneurial family gave me this mindset at a young age, and I have always seen myself doing some sort of small (or large) independent business in the future. I think the computer industry, specifically the software industry, is a good place to attempt to launch a business, and I am lucky to be involved and interested in technology, computers, and software. So the question is, what kind of business might I think of that will launch me into success? Any good and unique software idea could easily be the start of a business, I just have to stumble across an idea first. Sometimes very useful software tools are very trivial to build, they are just waiting for someone to do it.

Being my family's tech support person shows me quite frequently that the computer service industry has the potential to be very lucrative, especially if you approach the industry with a unique pitch. If I were to attempt to start a service business right now, I think I would initially market myself as someone who can help set up home networks, or secure existing networks (especially wireless networks). I am amazed at the amount of people with un-guarded wireless networks, who allow anyone to use their Internet connection - I imagine most of them don't even know that their connection is wide open. Making customers aware of this fact, and offering them help in fixing their security could be a good way to jump into the computer service industry and grab a share of the market.

I know people who still make money building and selling custom PC's in today's world of cheap Dells and even cheaper Walmart computers, and even someone starting small by selling one computer at a time has the potential to grow their business if they are diligent enough. With the right products and marketing technique it is still possible to start a lucrative ebay business; hell, it's even possible to make money by telling people how to start an ebay business. Many ideas cross my mind every day, and few are things that I actually pursue - but who knows what new technologies will emerge, and what opportunities will come along with them, in the next few years - with any luck I will find myself at the cutting edge of something new, and enjoying my attempts to make it on my own - until then I am guaranteed to continue the search - and if I never find something, there's always working for the man.
