Building a Home Theater PC
I am striving to put together a home theater PC. I have a TV capture card that I haven't used for a few years - and I have a spare Dell computer with a fresh install of Windows XP, waiting idly for a task. I even have a remote control that connects to and controls my current PC, but I don't really use it, and it would fit perfectly in a HTPC setup. I don't currently have cable television - it's too expensive, and it's distracting while in school, but I wouldn't mind having the ability to watch and capture television through the computer in the future. Even better, many television networks have been putting their shows online for "on demand" viewing - and there are services such as joost on their way to the mainstream - it seems the ideal time to have a home theater computer. Beyond using the computer for multimedia, it would also serve as a file server and a living room internet browser. The one component I am missing is a video card with an s-video output, which would allow me to use the television as a screen. Sadly, I think I am currently too poor to actually buy one, even one as cheap as $30 - but once I am back from my vacation, I should be able to find the funds and the time to finish this project. Does anyone out there have a HTPC already? Is anyone else in the process of putting one together? Mine certainly won't be anything spectacular once it's done, but I hope that it does the job. Yet another thing on my long-term to-do list!

Kevin this is your main man. Putting the time and effort into a ghetto HTPC isn't worth it. The parts for a decent one aren't that expensive, since speed isn't really a huge necessity. Just chill for a while and get a little bit more money I would say. Also if you are keeping it next to the TV do not underestimate noise. Make sure to get quiet parts. http://www.silentpcreview.com/ is a good resource.
