Averatec 3360 Replacement Battery or New Laptop?

I have had my Averatec 3360 Laptop for more than two years now, and it has served me well (to avoid any confusion I should say that in a previous blog post I mistakenly said I had the Averatec 3250 model, and while the 3250 has the same casing as mine, it turns out that I actually have the 3360-EG1). Now, as it ages my 3360 is starting to show some wear and tear, and it has sadly lost the luster that was once so clear. One of the most noticeable and annoying signs of age is the dramatically shortened battery life. When it was new the battery would easily allow 3 hours or work, and it now has trouble with squeezing out one hour. Instead of having an accurate gauge of when the battery will die, I now have to remember that 50% power remaining usually means that it is about to totally run out of juice. Despite trying to retrain the battery in the system BIOS, this problem persists, and it is becoming increasingly annoying to always be near my power adapter. So, this brings me to a great question that I can't seem to decide on: should I buy an Averatec 3360 replacement battery, or should I instead put the funds towards a new laptop? A new laptop is an enticing idea; prices have come down quite a bit in the last two years, and instead of spending somewhere around $100 for a replacement battery - I could put those funds towards a new system. Also, I don't know how much longer my Averatec will hold on, and opting for something new would ensure that I don't get left with a new battery for a busted laptop. On the opposite end of the argument, I could say that I shouldn't necessarily spend $600 - $1000 on a new laptop when I have one that works fine, and all it needs is $100 worth of maintenance. Also, most new laptops these days are being sold with Windows Vista, which I am currently attempting to avoid at all costs. I would have to find a retailer that sells XP laptops, which might limit my options. I am sure there are other arguments for and against both options, but I haven't thought of them yet. For now, I will likely shop and try and find a really good deal on a new 3360 battery, and at the same time shop and try to find a really good deal on a new system - maybe the whole shopping process will help me decide which way to go. If you have any input for me on the subject, it would be appreciated. Have you bought a replacement battery before? Do you ditch your old system every few years for a new one? Should I save all my money and just live with the short battery life? Tell me what you think! I'll tell you what I decide, if I can ever come to a decision.

Unless you are actually outstripping the abilities of the laptop and find it too slow to run your chosen programs I would save your money and go the repair route. Unless there are other hardware issues you will probably get at least $100 worth of use out of your current laptop.

Best way to avoid Vista? It's called Apple. Or, since you're a techie, Linux.
